Mictecacihuatl, the Lady of the Dead

How much do you know about Dia de los Muertos? Me? I’m learning... it’s always been something I’ve been fascinated about so I’ve decided to do a series of illustrations centered around the holiday.

I have been taking a course I found by @elenagarnu on Domestika that focused on creating digital portraits, I love how she uses analog textures to incorporate into projects by making marks with watercolors. I’ve also found myself paying more attention because the course is in Spanish and I can’t just play it as background noise. I’m in love and found a lot of new inspiration within her process.

I’ve been learning about Mictecacihuatl, the Lady of the Dead. Mictecacihuatl is La Santa Muerte, the Holy Death, and is the Queen of the Underworld. Sacrificed as an infant, she woke up in the underworld and grew to be a beautiful woman, marrying the King of the Underworld, Miclantecuhtl.
They rule over all three types of souls: those who died normal deaths, those who died heroic deaths, and those who died non-heroic deaths. They collect the bones of the dead in order to resurrect new life on Earth. People on the land of the living bury their dead with offerings and gifts so that they may rest in peace and be left alone by the Gods of the Underworld.

Who should I draw next? Stay tuned and keep creating!
